Owens leads R-S past East BY JACOB CONLEY [email protected] FOREST CITY — R-S Central (4-3) got two goals from senior Caleb Owens to pull away from East Rutherford(1-4-1) in a 3-0 victory Wednesday. R-S Central player Andrew Simmons opened the scoring with a 25-yard chip shot, but it was Owens play in the middle that proved to be the difference. “It was just a good team effort,” Owens said, “We were able to play with men forward. I think that’s why we had so many shots.” East Rutherford coach Neil VanDyke blames the Cavaliers tired legs for allowing the Hilltoppers to control the run of play. “This is our third game this week,” he said. “We had a hard time keeping up at times and in a county rivalry game, you have to be ready from the very beginning. I am proud of our effort though.” As the underdog, East Rutherford used an extra defender to keep R-S Central off the board. The strategy worked early as several clearances and a save by goalie Tucker Toney kept the game scoreless. It did not stay that way for long as Simmons curled a shot in the top corner of the net for a 1-0 lead. East responded with a pair of corner kicks moments later, but Brandon Bailey’s attempts were cleared by the Hilltopper wall . Central kept the ball on the Cavalier side of the field for much of the rest of the half and it result ed in a goal in the 29th minute. Chance Rector accepted a short pass in front of the goal and slid the ball to Owens for the easy goal. His tally made the halftime score 2-0 East showed more fight coming out of the break earning a corner kick in the 44th minute. The Cavaliers were whistled for a foul in front of the net to foil the attempt. The rest of the game then played out much as the first half with the R-S offense continually peppered the Cavalier goal with shots. Toney and the East defenders were up to the challenge with impressive saves and clearances to keep the deficit at two goals. “Give the East coach credit,” Hilltopper coach John Harrill said. “He made some adjustments at half time and made things tough on us. Caleb came through for us. He nows when to pass and when to shoot. He is like a coach on the field.” Owens took his shot again in the 75th minute when he converted a one on one opportunity versus Tucker to provide the final 3-0 margin. “Those chances are harder than they look,” Owens said of his final goal. “It’s part luck and part skill. I think that one was mostly luck.” East Rutherford returns to action Monday as they travel to another County rival, Chase. Central also hits the pitch Monday as they host Burns. Kickoff for both matches are set for 5:30 p.m.
