******** PADILLA ****** The Spanish surname Padilla is of local origin, Padilla is a Spanish and Portuguese name, also spelled Padillo, being one of those names derived from the place where a man once lived or where he once held land. There are two places by the name of Padilla in Castorgeriz in the Burgos region of Northern Spain. The surname Padilla is derived from these places, the one being Padilla de Arriba and the other Padilla de Abajo. It was used, at first, as a convenient method of identifying one who hailed from either of them. Padilla genealogy marks among its members Guantanamo prisoner Jose Padilla, Bolivian General and President David Padilla, and Cuban poet Heberto Padilla. Today, the family name Padilla are found all over the world due to migration. The surname spread throughout Spain as branches of the Padilla family settled away from their original home. For example, one Pedro de Padilla, from Burgos, settled in Vergara in Guipuzucoa. A descendant of Pedro de Padilla later moved to Viscaya where his family were ennobled. In 1647, one Antonio Garcia de Padilla of Valencia in Southern Spain was awarded a military honour by King Philip IV. The surname is now found in some numbers throughout Spain and in those areas where Spanish influenced has been strong, for example, both South and Central America as well as the United States. Perhaps the most notable bearer of the name was Juan de Padilla (1490-1521) The Spanish revolutionary leader of the war against the Emperor Charles V. Examples of these early recordings taken from authentic church and civil registry include Casilda Acuria de Padillo, at Nuestra Senora de La Antigua, Valladolid, Spain, on January 17th 1562, and Martinez Pablo Padilla, at San Esteban, Navarra, Spain, on April 29th 1596. Maria Joseph de Garcia Padilla was christened at Mission San Carlos, Moneterey, California, on April 16th 1795, and Leonarda Padillo married Esaura Huarez at Montebello, Los Angeles, California, on September 14th 1914.
