PANAJI/CURCHOREM: Despite the delayed revival of monsoon in Goa, the dams across the state have reached their threshold levels, with the Selaulim and the Panchwadi dams overflowing on Tuesday. The delay in the monsoon and the subsequent delay in its revival in the state had created some anxious moments as the water in the dams was expected to suffice till the end of August. Sources in the water resource department said that the Selaulim dam was overflowing after it breached its 41.150-metre mark on Tuesday. The source said that the water level had reached 41.12 metres late on July 21. He said that the Panchwadi dam is also overflowing after the water level crossed the 26-metre mark and was at 26.12 metres when reports last came in. Assistant engineer Shivanand Hosanani of the water resource department office at Pajimol-Sanguem said that despite delayed rains this year, the catchment areas have reserved sufficient quantity of water in the Selaulim dam. Expressing happiness over the quantity of water, he said that the dam supplies drinking water to the whole of South Goa and other parts of the state, including Porvorim. Besides, water from the dam is also supplied for irrigation facilities. An official in the water resource department said that the dam at Chapoli is reaching its threshold limit and the water level stood at 35.46 metres as against its maximum level of 38.75 metres. Similarly, he said that the water at the Amthane dam has reached 47.96 metres as against its maximum level of 50.025 metres. The official said that the department is closely monitoring water at the Anjunem dam, which has reached 80.08 metres. He said that the water level is being monitored as there is a threat of possible floods in the low-lying areas if the water in the dam reaches its optimum level. He said that in order to prevent it, the water may have to be released in the future. He, however, said that there is no cause for alarm yet.
