PANAJI: The southwest monsoon is active in some parts of the state, but the city recorded just 0.2mm of rainfall during the last 24 hours up to Friday evening and the overall season is deficient, sources said. After the monsoon advanced two days ahead of schedule on Tuesday, June 4, only a few areas of the state have witnessed a spells of rain and thunder showers. "The rainfall in Panaji is slightly deficient, but it will pick up in a couple of days," K V Singh, director of the meteorological centre stated. The weakening of the monsoon current has been attributed to the cyclonic circulation over northwest Arabian Sea off the Oman coast. "This had diverted the monsoon current, but it has become less marked now," Singh explained. The Met centre expects the monsoon to become active by Sunday. The rainfall recorded in the city is considered as a representative for the whole state. The seasonal total has reached only 44.3mm (less than 2 inches), about -73.0mm (almost 3 inches) short of normal. But Met centre officials stated that there have been showers in different parts of the state. The agriculture department officials said the deficit in rainfall will not affect operations much. "The rainfall during the past few days has helped but if the dry spell continues for a long time, it may have some impact," a source said.
