PASTOR JANE’S WEEKLY DEVOTIONAL They call these the “dog days of Summer,” named after a dog star named Sirius that shows up in the sky this time of year. The months of July and August are considered to be a time of lethargy and inactivity because of the effects of the heat. I can honestly say that when it gets this hot, I feel “dog-tired” a lot of the time. The days are long, and the heat makes it difficult to stay interested in anything other than a long, cold, refreshing drink of water. A well-known story in the gospel of John, chapter 4, is about a woman who came to a well one morning to draw some water. Jesus came to the same well that day and was there when she arrived. She, a woman whose life was going nowhere fast, came to the well every day for that which would sustain her life for just one more day. It was, no doubt, a tiresome daily chore. Jesus told her that the water he could give her would quench her thirst for good. When she realized that he was the promised Messiah, she left her water bucket behind, ran into town, and told everyone. The story records that, because of her testimony, many came to believe in Jesus and followed him. When life is weighted down from the heat that drains our energy, from the doldrums and drudgery of getting through just one more day, or from the burdens of guilt that we carry with us; we must remember that there is always relief in sight. Jesus is ready to quench our thirst for good. In him, we can live beyond the heat of the day, change our ways, and leave that bucket full of burdens and guilt behind. This week, stop for a cool, refreshing drink. The Lord of Life is waiting there for you. pastor@chinaspringumc
