PATIENCE, OUR GREATEST GIFT Unless you leave in an isolated island, everyday of your life, what matter most is to keep calm. Keeping calm in this regard is to have patience. Every day, I say ‘thank you’ to the Supreme Being, ‘for giving us patience’. This is the greatest gift man received from the creator. Many writers had written and spoken on what the greatest gift ever received by man from God is. Some say love, another will tell you it is hope. Quoting from Joseph Matthew jnr. in his work titled “Love against All Hope”, “you cannot know the true meaning of hurting, if you have never fallen in love and can only truly feel hurt by someone only when you care for them”. To an extent, I agree with that. Also he said, “With hope anything can be lived through believing the future is going to be better and not worse.” However, patience is an elevator that moves you gently towards achieving greatness in life. Cool reaction will open up a line of communication, from which ideas will flow to you. In patience, there is everything. It takes patience to love. Yes! To love, you need patience. It is also a major tool to forgiveness. He who doesn’t have patience lives less than he should have. With patience, God has blessed us with everything. Initially, everything was fine for a particular man, and at a point, things fell apart. His wealth is no longer reckoned with. He became a subject of mockery. To cut short the long story, he had an encounter with God. And he was asked “young man, you have the opportunity to choose one out of these four things;” Wealth, children, long life and patience” After a long and thorough thinking, really, he needed money at that point, with three wives and no children. Also, he thought to himself that long life was needed because he didn’t want to die young. He begged God to give him time. After critically analyzing these options, he chose patience. Even though many things appeared to be initially working against him, he conquered. With patience, he had money, he built house, had children and was able to take care of them and he lived longer. More so, the suffering of the Israelites was because of their lack of patience. When Moses went to meet God, the people couldn’t wait, which led them to idolatry, as a result of which they journeyed for forty years in the stead of four days. Can you now see how important patience is? It takes patience to build a relationship and maintain it. Many marriages are crashing today, mostly because they lack this great virtue. Patience answers all questions, it opens all doors, and it gives strength. In the light of this, in everything in life, patience plays a vital role. For you to forgive someone that has hurt you and your feelings, for you to keep moving even when all hope seem lost, for you to analyze and plan your life, for you to know the meaning of your existence in life, for you to know that all the resources you need are in your hands, you need patience. Therefore, where patience resides, there lies hope. It takes patience to live. Indisputably, I submit that life without patience is not worth living.
