PBB leader criticised for pro-China remark “Do you want to pull Malaysia backward with its harsh cyber laws?” Vernon asked. (MALAYSIAKINI Wednesday 22nd January, 2014) Sarawak PKR today criticised Assistant Minister of Youth Development Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah for wanting Malaysia to adopt China’s harsh laws on the social media. State PKR information Bureau Chief Vernon Aji Kedit said it is dangerous for Abdul Karim to suggest adopting the harsh cyber laws of China. “Is he inferring that Malaysia should be like China, a communist and totalitarian government that implements harsh laws on its people? “Why are you using China as an example?” Vernon asked in reference to a statement made by Abdul Karim (left), who is a senior leader of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu. Abdul Karim said on Monday that the federal government should to review the cyber law of the country, including tightening and enforcing it to prevent abuse that could stir unrest. “Many of the postings are just mere rubbish or untrue, which at times cause some anxiety to the people. “What Malaysia needs now is for the MCMC laws to be reviewed, tightened and enforced. “This is very important as we do not want the country to go into chaos as a result of the irresponsible actions of some cyber users,” Abdul Karim, who is Asajaya assemblyman, said. He added: “In Malaysia, unfortunately, the government wants ICT penetration to go to every corner of the country but the government does not have the means to fully enforce those naughty users, who post seditious, incriminating, defamatory materials in the Net. “In China, if you post anything seditious against the government, next thing you know is that the government enforcement unit will be at your doorstep.” Malaysia is multi-cultural, democratic Reacting to this at a media conference, Vernon asked: “Is Abdul Karim saying Malaysia should be like China, meaning that Malaysia should be a communist and totalitarian state? “You are using China as a basic example and are you therefore suggesting that we should become like China. This is dangerous as Malaysia is a multi-cultural, democratic country. “All our neighbours are moving ahead. Even Myanmar, which used to be suppressive, is now moving ahead in its social media. “Do you want to pull Malaysia backward with its harsh cyber laws?” Vernon asked. On Abdul Karim’s demand that MCMC be given more ‘teeth’, Vernon pointed out that Malaysia has sufficient cyber laws to deal with instigators. “Only recently, a PKR leader was arrested for allegedly posting a seditious remark on his Facebook,” he said. “When you are asking for more ‘teeth’, are you only targeting the Opposition social media?” he asked, pointing out that Abdul Karim should be fully aware that even PBB has its own media unit which has been spinning lies and slanders against the opposition. Vernon said: “If we look at social media, the ones that are making so much noise are the social media of the PBB and the BN. “The latest instigation by BN blogs appeared last night when they put out a list of ‘murtad’ people to disseminate such information with a view to inflame the feelings of Muslims who read the list. “This is not done by the Opposition, but by the pro-government blogs, Perkasa and extremist Islamic organisations. Are you going to take action against them?” Vernon also expressed his hope that the people would not be hoodwinked by Abdul Karim. beta.malaysiakini/news/252465
