PCI highlights Pakistani women’s achievements DUBAI: Pakistan Change Initiative (PCI) held its first annual International Womens’ Day conference at the Capital Club DIFC last week. The event was well attended and delegates included diplomats, businessmen, entrepreneurs and bankers from both Pakistan and other UAE based communities. The panelists comprised of highly successful women such as Dr Maleeha Lodhi (former ambassador to the UK and US), Nasreen Kasuri (chairperson, Beaconhouse Schools), Amber Saigol (chairperson, DAWN Media), Sidra Iqbal (youth icon) and Dr Qinza Najm (artist). The themes focused on empowerment, innovation and leadership. The forum celebrated recent figures illustrating that women in Pakistan have risen to the highest levels in some key sectors like education, politics and fashion. “We are the first Muslim country to have a female prime minister and head of central bank. Politically, women have done well and now 20 per cent of all Parliamentarians are women,” said Tooba Ghafur. Education was a recurring theme through both panel discussions as Pakistan has a low literacy rate compared to other countries. Education plays a pivotal role in developing human capital in any society. In Pakistan, however, twice as many men receive a higher education than women. This issue needs to be addressed if we are to progress as a country and respect women’s right to receiving education. - Via The Gulf Today.
