PDVSA PRESIDENT CONFIRMS MALDONADO TO LOTUS: The president of the Venezuelan oil giant PDVSA has more or less confirmed that Pastor Maldonado will be heading to Lotus in 2014. The Venezuelan newspaper El Nacional reports that Rafael Ramírez, the president has overseen the deal with the Lotus F1 Team. PDVSA are Maldonados main sponsors and have deep pockets when it comes to sponsoring a team. Maldonado recently announced that he would be leaving the Williams team after dissatisfaction with the 2013 car. With Lotus in dire need of money through sponsorship, it had emerged that Maldonado would be running alongside Nico Hulkenberg for the vacant seat. Hulkenbergs chances are visibly disappearing after he turned down a chance to contest the 2013 Lotus in place of the injured Kimi Raikkonen for the final two races. Lotus deal with Quantum Motorsports also has not closed yet, despite the head of Quantum Mansoor Ijaz told the media in Abu Dhabi that it was pretty much done. Gerard Lopez, the Lotus F1 Team owner told Autosport It needs to happen eventually, he said. If it doesnt? Well...right now we are just running things as they are for ourselves, and then we will decide. But we are for sure not going to give it forever. Lopez hints they are not yet giving up on the Quantum deal, but now they have Maldonado and the PDVSA as a secure and more likely option.
