PH Navy, US Marines to hold exercises all over Luzon Over 4,000 Filipino and American troops will take part in a large-scale military exercise to be held in various areas in Luzon and in Palawan, fronting the West Philippine Sea beginning Sept. 29, the Philippine Navy (PN) said. Amphibious Landing Exercise 2015 (Phiblex 15), which will last until October 10, will involve at least 2,000 US Marine Corps and the US Navy personnel, said Navy public affairs officer, Lt. Commander Marineth Domingo. From the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Domingo said at least 700 PN personnel will participate in the exercise, while the Army will be sending one platoon from its Field Artillery. The Air Force will likewise provide personnel and platform for the simulated close air support operations. “The US contingent is bigger because although it is not yet definite, I think two US Navy ships will be arriving,” Domingo said. She added that this year’s Phiblex, although definitely a new and a “bigger one,” will trace the footsteps of the previous Balikatan (Shoulder to Shoulder) and the Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) that were held also in Luzon. During Phiblex 15, training will be split between the following areas – Palawan, Marine Base Ternate in Cavite, Naval Education and Training Command (NETC) in San Antonio, Zambales; Clark Air Field in Pampanga, Subic, and Crow Valley in Tarlac. Domingo said that in Palawan, there will military exchanges in tactical warfare simulation, amphibious operations and maritime security planning, and command post exercise. “They will have an actual training on amphibious operations in Palawan,” she said. Non-combatant evacuation operations (NEO) is slated at the Subic and Clark areas, while mechanized assault operation will be conducted at the NETC. Other events include small arms and artillery live fire training, ship-to-shore movement and combined arms training, and civil-military operations. including various humanitarian and civic assistance projects. “The general objective of Phiblex, like in any other exercise in the Navy, is to improve interoperability and combat readiness of the participating forces, the Philippines and the US forces, and of course enhance security cooperation in the region,” said Domingo.
