PLACEMENT I have no words For the words That would be words But are not. I have no feelings For words on a page That are wordless Though they represent the lot. Words that circulate, meaningless Trying to mean, end up sounding Mean and pointless, scribbled Careless, words on lists forgotten. Words blur into lines Hold steady the whiteness Of paper, paper, pages All bound for naught but eyes, unseeing. Weary questions, answered Thus and thus and thus We already know the answers And who will respond thusly. Words on walls, even graffiti Is no longer avant garde We now look in trash heaps For that one latent pearl. As misspelled cardboard signs Protest the end of the world Ads and news meld pointless Into the sale of false words as guide. Wording ends with silence. Words must be or they be not. Tinkered, fluffed, fondled Blight, beggar, beauteous heavens. Made, making, maker, maudlin Count the line breaks, prepositions Laud its running, put out to pasture Green is the crop, wind what we gather. COPYRIGHT ANNA HUSAIN March 19, 2014
