PLEASE HELP FUND EVAN’S WAY TO THE WORLD FOOD OLYMPICS My son, Evan, will be leaving for Italy in only 9 days on October 13th. Evan has been selected as one of 240 official U.S. delegates for the 2014 Terra Madre & Salone del Gusto global food and farming conference in Turin, Italy, also known as the World Food Olympics where delegates from more than 100 countries gather in Turin’s Olympics Stadium. The conference is a powerful and transformative experience that inspires attendees to change the food system through a global consciousness and deeper respect for the diverse, international food movement. Fitting for this year’s theme, the UN has declared 2014 as the International Year of Family Farming (IYFF). As a delegate, Slow Food International pays for Evan’s conference admissions, meals and lodging for the four-day event, but Evan must pay for his own air travel and conference workshops and seminars. Plus, he also needs to raise funds for a month’s ground transportation and lodging to travel to farms outside Turin, Florence, Rome and Lecce to work as a volunteer. At the conference gathering with so many others of similar mindset at an international level, building relationships globally with people working toward the same goals of nutritious, delicious and safe food will be an incredible source of inspiration and energy for Evan’s work as a passionate, sustainable small farmer. Working on farms for a month, he will see Italian culinary culture firsthand, as well as learn about traditional farming methods, discover unique heirloom seeds to bring home and share, and learn new lessons and ideas in diversity that will benefit our own food system.
