PLEASE, Read and SHARE!!! We NEED a WAVE Of SUPPORT!!! WHAT: The city of Memphis does NOT pay Social Security on employees! Therefore these employees do not have that safety net. The tradeoff is the city PROMISED these employees they would pay 70% of their insurance premiums for life to include their spouses. The employee and RETIREE are responsible for 30% plus all co-pay increases or deductibles. These people worked years and planned their lives around these benefits trusting the city to PROTECT them!!! The City Council has BROKEN this promise!!! Instead for years they have mismanaged our citizens taxes and engaged in reckless spending sprees. Many of these projects have been disasters!!! They have NOT protected the Pension and Insurance fund for employees. Below is a list of just a few of the items they HAVE found money to fund: * $195 Million for Bass Pro or the Pyramid Bait Shop * $ 66 Million on Raleigh Springs Mall * $ 43 Million on Beale Street Landing * $ 21 Million on AutoZone/Redbirds * $ 18 Million on Overton Square Parking * $ 15 Million on Sears Crosstown Renovation * $ 9 Million on Harahan Bike Bridge HOW: The Chamber of Commerce mounted a major PR campaign months prior to the vote!!! Their message to all the major businesses and organizations was to assure them this change would not REALLY have any major affect on the city employees. These groups were told if they did not support this action a $.50 property tax would be the result. Of course, everyone said let the employees pay the tab!!! Below is a summary of the changes: * OVER 65 RETIREE with Medicare A & B will now pay 100% * OVER 65 RETIREE without Medicare will continue to pay 30% * UNDER 65 RETIREE will now pay 100% - Increase: 300-$1,600 per mth * SPOUSES if working are FORCED OFF to insurance plans if employed * RETIREE - SPOUSE with NO other coverage - SORRY - NO Coverage * CURRENT employees will pay a 24% premium increase WHO: Boards and Commissions, Law Division, City Court Clerk, Parks and Neighborhoods, Engineering Division, Executive Division, Finance Division Fire Services, General Services, Housing and Community Development, Human Resources, Information Services, Police Services, Public Works Memphis Shelby County Airport Authority (MSCAA), Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) and Planning and Development WHEN: These changes will take effect on 1/1/15. RESULT: Memphis will have a severely disgruntled work force. Many will not be able to afford to retire. Many retirees will face financial ruin because their pension is not enough to maintain the normal monthly expenses and this increase in premiums. Severely ill retirees could face a much worse fate. The city will lose many employees who are being recruited by other cities who pay more with better benefits. It will be much harder for Memphis to recruit. When the citizen NEEDS a 1st RESPONDER there is a STRONG possibility someone who NEEDS to retire, but cant will be the one who shows up to HELP!!! SOLUTION: HELP us educate the citizens of Memphis!!!
