PM says govt expediting infrastructure projects, monitoring progress --PM says coal supply remains a problem --Infrastructure projects being expedited --To ensure power plants commissioned by 2015 get adequate fuel The government is expediting infrastructure projects that were held up for lack of regulatory approvals and monitoring the progress in the sector on a quarterly basis, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said at the annual general meeting of Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India. "Many projects have been held up for lack of regulatory approvals. These are being expedited. A separate cell has been set up recently to identify big ticket projects, both public and private, and to see how they can be helped through various hurdles," he said. "Infrastructure is absolutely critical for our medium term growth prospects and we are monitoring progress in this area on a quarterly basis," Singh said. Pursuant to this, the government has plans to set up two major ports in Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal, the prime minister said, adding new airports were being envisaged for Navi Mumbai, Juhu, Goa, Pune and Kannur. Singh said new small airports are being built at 50 other locations and processing of some major railway projects, including an elevated rail corridor for Mumbai, was underway. "The feasibility of a bullet train from Mumbai to Ahmedabad is being studied," he said adding industrial corridors from Delhi to Mumbai, Amritsar to Kolkata, and Chennai to Bangalore are being considered. The government is monitoring all these initiatives at the highest level with a "sense of urgency", Singh said. On the condition of the power sector in the country, the prime minister said all plants commissioned by 2015 will have adequate fuel supplies. "We have seen a very strong expansion in power generation capacity but coal supply became a problem. We have now resolved the problem and fuel supply agreements are being signed which will ensure that all plants that are commissioned by 2015 will have adequate supplies of coal consisting of a mix of domestic and imported coal," he said.
