PNPRS LECTURE SERIES 2014 Second Lecture UST AMV Multipurpose Hall 3:00 – 5:30 pm April 12, 2014 Registration fee: 350.00 (includes certificate and meal) Topic: ARTICULATING PHILOSOPHY IN CHILDREN’S LITERATURE: A STRUCTURALIST LOOK AT SELECT STORIES IN SEVERINO REYES’ MGA KWENTO NI LOLA BASYANG Lecturer: Fleurdeliz R. Altez-Albela, Ph.D. University of Santo Tomas Abstract: This paper shall venture into providing a philosophic glimpse at select stories in Ang mga Kwento ni Lola Basyang by Severino Reyes through the lenses of Literary and Anthropological Structuralism of Ferdinand de Saussure and Claude Levi-Strauss. While having in mind the need for a synchronic take of each story, they shall undergo the two-fold process of 1.) identifying among plots the usual and recurring patterns or motifs, binary oppositions and basic narrative models, which proceeds to 2.) discover deep cultural structures that reveal surprising truths about this nation of diverse peoples. This project is written as response to the need for an alternative approach to enunciate philosophic themes that are oftentimes found too abstract and lofty for children. Through this structuralist look, the author hopes to open the most systematic story-telling avenues to be able to help the parent or the teacher to 1.) intelligently point out the values (cultural/universal) that these stories appropriately express, 2.) help the child to “read closely” before “reading beyond”, and 3.) continuously ignite the child and the childlike’s sense of wonder.
