POEM OF THE WEEK(2) When shall we smile again? (Dedicated to all the youths who died during the recent Immigration job-seeking tragedy) When shall we smile again? with the exponential flight of the cost of living upswing like a famished falcon, clawing our chicken-hearted purse, riding high on the wave crest of the whirlwind of Greed, deaf to the cackled cry of the ruffled mother-hen and the tantrums of the owner, as the proud predators climb higher far beyond the sight of we common mortals. When shall we smile again? with the incubus of the vampire Boko Haram gnawing at the heartstrings of our once-cherished unity, driving Fear down the spires of peace-loving citizens, murdering innocent children in their sleep, as hostage takers steal our common joy even as billions of our common patrimony grow wild wings from the national till. When shall we smile again? with the growing snake lines, of graduate job-seekers under the scorching sun, even as the caravan-like cars, thirst for black gold like camels for the distant oasis, igniting flames of angry fist-fights in a land whose verdant veins vibrate with the milk and myrrh only for the gadflies of kingly Graft. When shall we smile again? with the drums of disunity dogging our every footstep, as the 2015 general elections loom darker than the much-feared Armageddon, while the paid pipers fan the embers of our once -cherished Trust taunting our fragile fraternity, in an air, electric like an uneasy calm before the storm. Amidst these rubble of cancerous waste and want, when shall we smile again? When? When? When? This poem was first written in April 1993 but updated with current happenings?
