POETRY AFRICA is usually a place for the rule-breakers, the dilettante, the hippies, those who think laterally, - and those who pretend. The Sneddon Kobus Moolman was in his element last night, with a poem about the phallus - a word he did not use - he used the usual term that most people are familiar with. He said penis again and again and again... Talk about fixation at the oro-genital phase... Then there was the fellow who complained about diarrhoea (the victuals were good) and not being paid by a book-shop. His poem was fecal and nauseating. The rappers were in their element - rapidly stringing together clicking, complex words which appeared nonsensical. A Benin/French poet went on and on and on in French. He had translations which went on and on and on... The worst were the many South Africans who in true, arrogant, ubermenschen style spoke to a select audience of compatriots in their own lingo which most of the foreigners and many of the new untermenschen did not understand - They were saying that we are the first class citizens - the rest of you are the untermenschen. Of course most of them have little idea that they are aping the Nazis... From Denmark to India to Norway, I have found that a common lingua franca was used and when the indigenous language was used, there were always translations... Understanding and consideration for others demands intelligence, insight, maturity and empathy. Thats in short supply in our country. Untermenschen - Legally designated inferior race. Ubermenschen - Master race.
