POETRY AND DREAMS: There are two poems that address the power of dreams. One written by Ono Komachi and another by Legislator Betty Jean Grantentitled Altar of Despair. Photograph is a self portrait by James Divine and obviously has a dreamlike quality to it. In the first poem by Ono No Komachi, the speaker imagines staying in her dream instead of returning to her regular waking life. Have you ever had a dream that you didnt want to wake from? In Altar of Despair, Ms. Grant sounds a mustering, rallying trumpet call to awaken from a dream and do something about a clear and present evil. Did he appear because I fell asleep thinking of hiim? If only I had known I was dreaming Id never have wakened. ALTAR OF DESPAIR Legislator Betty Jean Grant Were drowning in a sea of misery. and nobody nowhere seems to care. Theyre too busy robbing and killing.t and worshiping at he Altar of Despair. The American Dream has become a fantasy. we are living dead in a land of fable. rocked by the hand that cradled the killer.... killed by the hand that rocked the cradle. We deafen our ears to the childrens pleas so we hear not their pain filled cries We pretend to ignore their foodless bellies while we gaze at them with hate filled eyes. We worship at the Altar of Despair as we drown in a sea of misery and nobody nowhere seems to care because we are living in a land of fantasy My Poetry Blog while still under construction is nearly built. Assignment-- Should you so choose to accept it. Imagine the continuation of Komachis dream.--the part you didnt get to experience because you woke up--and write a poem about it. Consider the brutality of reality in Grants poem. Might you have a remedy? Write a poem about it. In the Bible As Literature component I recommend reading Matthew 25 if you do that kind of thing.
