POLICE IN ROCHDALE LAUNCH DARKER NIGHTS OPERATION Date: Friday 24 October Time: 2-4pm Location: Rochdale Police Station, The Esplanade, Rochdale, OL16 1AG Ahead of the clocks going back on Sunday, police in Rochdale are launching their response to the increasingly darker nights. A street briefing will be held on Friday to mark to start of the campaign. Inspector Michelle Hughes, who will be leading the event said: “This time of year historically sees a rise in burglary as the nights get darker earlier. This initiative is designed to highlight to our community what we are doing to address this issue. In addition we want to work with residents and partners to increase awareness of the steps that can be taken to reduce the opportunity for thieves. We would also welcome any ideas they may have to lessen the impact these offences have on our communities.” The operation, which will run throughout the winter months, will use a multi-agency approach, working with key partners and community members. There will be weekly street briefings across the area as well as the Special Constabulary and Rochdale Police Cadets assisting throughout with crime prevention community patrolling. Police are providing the public with simple security steps to help avoid being a target for burglars this autumn. Timers can be set to switch lights on when it goes dark and are especially useful if the house is unoccupied, they can also be used to turn on other electrical devices including radios and set alarms when leaving the house. People are reminded to always lock doors and windows when they are at home and not to leave open windows and doors unattended. Valuables should be kept out of sight from windows and it is useful to photograph jewellery and other expensive items. They can then be registered for free on immobolise, a database that allows police to trace property back to its original owner if it’s stolen. Homeowners should also consider investing in a safe which can be placed in a secure part of the home and bolted to the floor so it cannot be easily removed. Never leave spare keys hidden outside as burglars often know all of the usual hiding places. Wheelie bins can also be used as a climbing aid for burglars so try to secure them away from windows when they’re not in use. An effective way to reduce burglary is to work together with neighbours by setting up a Home Watch scheme.
