POLICE SCOTLAND ENCOURAGES BIKERS TO KEEP SAFE THIS SUMMER With motorcyclists taking advantage of the improving weather, Police Scotland is urging bikers to stay safe on the road. Road Safety Scotland (part of Transport Scotland), Police Scotland and the Scottish Government are working together to help reduce the number of motorcycle casualties by encouraging bikers to reduce their speed a little as the traditional summer biking season gets underway. Motorbikes only account for 1% of road traffic but 12% of road deaths and latest figures reveal that male bikers account for 90% of all motorcycle casualties and almost a third are aged 40 - 49. Officers will be speaking to bikers whilst on patrol to raise awareness of safer biking, best practice when out on the road and to help reduce the number of bike-related incidents across the country. Chief Inspector Fraser Candlish – Operational Support Division, said today: “The biking season is well underway and with the weather getting better, it’s a popular time for both experienced riders and those returning to a motorbike for some time to get out and explore the country. “We want to encourage safer, considerate biking behaviour among riders, particularly during the summer months. “Statistics unfortunately show most motorcycle casualties occur during the day and in good weather, and with more motorcyclists getting their bikes out at the start of summer, it’s important to take it easy in all conditions. “Please enjoy being on your bike, but more importantly, concentrate on your riding. Be aware that most serious and fatal crashes happen on rural roads, at corners, or while overtaking, or at junctions. Make sure you slow down to a speed which enables you to react effectively avoiding the chances of being involved in a crash.”
