POSTED THIS BECAUSE THE COMMERCIALIZING OF CHRISTMAS HAS OFTEN MADE ME A SAD SUCKER for THESE PLOYS. It may be a good thing to copy reality; but to invent reality is much, much better. From an 1876 letter from Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi We are surrounded by images of what other people think our life could or should be. Television, movies, glossy magazines and store displays, each carefully crafted to make us believe we need whatever that is. There is an entire industry centered around making us feel we lack something that will make us happy. Promotors of lack paint a beautiful reality that is only attainable with studio extras, special lighting, food stylists, and hairdressers on call. We become so accustomed to their version of reality that we unconsciously begin to copy what we see, and internalize the message of needing more in order to be happy. Stop and think a minute. What is reality? Is it a carefully crafted scene? Or is it more like the laughter of a child, the dew on the grass, a home cooked meal, or the sense of satisfaction in a day well-lived? Open your eyes to your own reality. Clear out the constructed desires, and listen to your soul.
