PREMIER BAIRD KICKS A GOAL FOR FANS WITH $600M FUNDING COMMITMENT TO SYDNEY SPORTS FACILITIES, INCLUDING ANZ STADIUM SYDNEY’S dream of a redeveloped Olympic stadium to take sport in NSW to a new level moved a step closer today with NSW Premier Mike Baird announcing a $600m funding package for the city’s three major stadiums. Releasing the State Infrastructure Strategy report, Premier Baird said his Government had both the funds and the will to upgrade Sydney’s major sporting arenas, which have fallen behind that offered in other States and throughout the Asia-Pacific region. The Premier confirmed funding for the dilapidated Allianz Stadium in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, and said the Government would also fund upgrades in Greater Sydney, with a cost/benefit analysis to be conducted at ANZ Stadium and Pirtek Stadium at Parramatta. Are you excited about upgraded sports stadiums in Sydney? Would you use the proposed Light Rail transport link from Parramatta, Burwood and Strathfield into Sydney Olympic Park for events? Check out the video showing the proposed redevelopment of ANZ Stadium: youtu.be/_kiLqPlM-RE Confirming his Government’s commitment to Sydney Olympic Park and ANZ Stadium, Mr Baird said: “If you look around the world and you think of some of the big events, I think this city having a large stadium makes sense. (ANZ Stadium) is fantastic when it is filled for the major events. But at the same time it needs to be complementary. That’s why we have Allianz, we have (Sydney Olympic Park) and we are also considering the expansion of Parramatta. Now, that package is something that I think is very powerful for the State.” In further good news for western Sydney, the Premier said the Government was committed to the Parramatta Light Rail project, with support growing for a light rail route linking Parramatta and Sydney Olympic Park, continuing through to Burwood and Strathfield. ANZ Stadium Managing Director, Mr Daryl Kerry, said it was good news for the people of NSW that Premier Baird had announced an increase in funding for its NSW Sport and Cultural Fund. The Premier said his Government had made a commitment of “1.2 billion – up from an original $500 million”. Mr Kerry said: “Stadium management looks forward to follow-up discussions with Government and providing a cost/benefit analysis for upgrading ANZ Stadium, which generates $301 million a year in economic activity for the State of NSW.” Fourteen years on from hosting the Sydney Olympics, ANZ Stadium management has released detailed plans to redevelop the Stadium and make it the most cutting-edge sports and entertainment precinct in the world. About 1.5 million fans will pass through the gates of ANZ Stadium to watch events this year - almost double than will attend events at Allianz Stadium in the eastern suburbs. ANZ Stadium recently announced that global construction and engineering company Laing O’Rourke has been selected to carry out a proposed $350 million redevelopment of the Stadium.
