PRESIDENT KHAMA RECEIVES RHINO CONSERVATION AWARD The Office of the President is pleased to announce that yesterday evening His Excellency the President, Lt,. General Seretse Khama Ian Khama was honoured at the Annual Rhino Conservation Awards held in Johannesburg, South Africa in the category of Best Political and Judicial Support. The award is for outstanding work done in the fight against Rhino Poaching in Africa. H.E the President was recognized for his pivotal role as a patron of the Khama Rhino Sanctuary Trust, the Kalahari Conservation Society in encouraging the protection of Botswana’s Rhinos. The Khama Rhino Sanctuary has increased its black and white Rhino population significantly over the years. Most importantly, his awareness creation on Rhino issues and his leading political commitment, demonstrated by among others, the hosting of the Sustainability Summit in May 2012. It was also highlighted that he as a key figure for the &beyond relocation “Rhinos without Borders”. Botswana’s High Commissioner to South Africa Mr Zenene Sinombe received the award on behalf of His Excellency the President. Last nights awards had five categorie: Best Field Ranger; Best Conservation Practitioner; Best Political and Judicial Support; Best Science Research and Technology; and Best Awareness, Education and Funding. In this respect we are pleased to report that Mr. Mpho Malongwa who works for Wilderness Safaris in the Moremi Game Reserve Botswana also won in the category of Best Ranger for his dedication in the field monitoring of founder population of both black and white Rhinos in Botswana. Mr Malongwa his received the award in person. The awards, which were hosted by the patron of the global Rhino Conservation initiative, H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco, aim to create greater public awareness of Rhino conservation issues and to recognize exceptional individuals and organizations for their efforts in various fields of conservation. The annual event coincides with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) World Ranger Day.
