PRESS RELEASE 23RD SESSION OF THE COUNCIL OF MEMBER STATES OF THE INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR DEMOCRACY AND ELECTORAL ASSISTANCE AND THE ANNUAL DEMOCRACY FORUM: 24 – 26 NOVEMBER 2014, GABORONE, BOTSWANA The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation wishes to inform that the Government of Botswana and the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) will co-host the 23rd Session of Council of Member States of International IDEA and the Annual Democracy Forum from 24 – 26 November 2014 in Gaborone. The Annual Democracy Forum will be officially opened by Hon. Dr. Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation. The keynote speaker will be Professor James A. Robinson of Harvard University. Prof. Robinson is the co-author of the best-selling book on natural resource management “Why Nations Fail.” Mr. Yves Leterme, Secretary General of International IDEA and former Prime Minister of Belgium will address the conference. The theme for the Annual Democracy Forum is “Fostering Democracy and Development Through Sound Management of Natural Resources.” International IDEA is an inter-governmental organisation that was launched in February 1995 in Stockholm, Sweden to promote and advance sustainable democracy and improve and consolidate electoral processes globally. Currently, it has a membership of 29 countries. Botswana joined International IDEA in 1997. Botswana holds the chairmanship of the Council of International IDEA for the year 2014. Botswana assumed the chairmanship of the Council of International IDEA because of her good track record of democracy, good governance, the rule of law and sound management of natural resources. The Annual Democracy Forum will have three thematic sessions on “Democracy and Development: Issues and Challenges,” “Legal Frameworks and Standards for Resource Management” and “Democratising Development Through Shared Responsibility for Sound Natural Resource Management.” The Forum will be attended by politicians, policymakers, civil society leaders and experts from Africa and other regions of the world.
