PRESS RELEASE: BOTSWANA TO NEXT YEAR HOST FOLLOW UP CONFERENCE TO THE 2nd INTERNATIONAL LONDON CONFERENCE ON THE ILLEGAL TRADE IN WILDLIFE The Ministry of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism will be hosting the follow up conference to the London Conference on the Illegal Trade in Wildlife on the 03rd March 2015 in Kasane, Botswana. The London Conference brought together Heads of Governments, representatives of Heads of Governments and Regional Economic Integration Organisations who noted with grave concern the rise in the illicit trade in wildlife with its consequent social, environmental and economic impacts. Through the London Declaration, those present called for political commitment to combat this scourge and agreed to a number of actions to achieve this end. These primarily focused on eradicating the market for illegal wildlife products, eliminating demand for illegal wildlife products, destroying seized wildlife products and enforcing CITES provisions on regulating the international trade in wildlife. Delegates also proposed actions to criminalise poaching and wildlife trafficking, and related crimes including by ensuring such criminal offences are classified as “serious crimes” and to address corruption and money-laundering facilitating wildlife trafficking and related offences by adopting or amending legislation. The upcoming high level meeting which will coincide with World Wildlife Day will again bring together Heads of States, Regional Integration bodies and Inter Governmental Organisations to review status of implementation of the actions agreed as part of the London Declaration. It is anticipated that more countries will commit themselves to the Declaration in the run-up to the Kasane Conference.
