CASTRIES, Sunday, Aug 18th, 2013 – Hundreds of Indo-St. Lucians’ Friends Relatives & well wishers Joined together today in the first ever in the history of St Lucia, Indian Day (Jounen Indienne) There were people from all over the world, @ Campus-B of the vieux Fort Comprehensive Secondary School. They were given the official nod from a slew of local officials who delivered the assurance that their quest to take their proper seat in the annals of St. Lucian history is guaranteed. Over the past few months there has been a concerted movement to give Saint Lucians of Indian descent their due by way of recognition of their contribution to the development of the island over the last 154 years when the first indentured Labourers from India arrived here to work the land, following the abolition of slavery. To date, Indo-St. Lucians have made noteworthy contributions to, and continue to excel in various fields including politics, medicine, agriculture, media and communications and law to name a few. Praise and endorsement were delivered by many such as the Guyana Consul to St. Lucia Lokesh Singh who pledged his office’s continued support to the development of Indians on the island. Guest Speakers from the other Islands were Ms, Diana Ramasssmy President of the Indian Heritage Federation in Martinique. (Nilam Sangha). Mr, Kanhai Kangal of the National Council of Indian Culture of Trinidad and Tobago. The gathering also heard from the island’s sole Hindu Priestess Anna Sadoo of the Jagannatha Bindu Sarovara Temple who said that her organization welcomed anyone who was interested in learning more about the Hindu Faith and Indian culture. Another of the special guest speakers was Sister Jasmin Bisnath of the Brahma Kumaries from Trinidad. She is the Vice President, Brahma Kumaris Raja Yoga Centre Trinadad Inc,& coordinator Raja Centre, Chaguanas, Trinadad. Meanwhile, Ms. Debra C. Tobierre the Senator Representing Vieux fort gave an excellent speech. Ms. Debra C. Tobierre - who is of Indian descent - also attended the event with her family, meeting friends and family from the Hundreds of Indo-St. Lucians from around the island who were at the Indian celebration in Vieux Fort. In her address, Ms. Debra C. Tobierre spoke of her experience growing up in St. Lucia where she said she faced no discrimination; she lauded the acceptance of St. Lucians of Indian Descent that she said has assured a fully integrated society. She also applauded the move to recognize Indians here and pledged her support in future endeavors. St Lucians were dazzled by the fantastic Dancing, Drumming & singing from the Trinidad Group. Hundreds of Indo-St. Lucians, their friends and family also heard from Guy Joseph, himself of Indian Descent. We also heard from the Leader of the opposition United Workers Party, Mr. Allan Chastanet. Who fully indorsed the Indian Heritage of St Lucia & lauded their initiative. Mr. Chastanet pledged his partys support for the continued efforts of the Indian Heritage Association. The Indian National Day in St. Lucia where official recognition was given to the “everything Indian” on island including cuisine, fashion, faith as all is being done to foster pride in the race in St. Lucia. The Indian Heritage Association of St. Lucia operating under the theme: “Unity in Diversity” is continuing to bring the message of Indian pride to every St. Lucian of Indo descent here, is planning yet another celebration this time in The Mabouya Valley. We will have small celebrations every 3 Months, on the last Sunday of the Month, till we get back to August, where we will have our annual Indian Day Celebration. Compton said. We are also in the planning stage to bring Divali (The Hindu Festival Of Lights) to St Lucia next year. So you can see there are lots more ahead from the Indian Heritage Association of St Lucia. The event was a great success, & we look forward to an even bigger celebration next year 2014.
