PRESS RELEASE For Immediate release (15/11/13) “No civic education in Mzimba” The Malawi Electoral Commission would like to correct the record of misinformation that was presented in an article that appeared in The Daily Times of November 15, 2013. The article quoted Group Village Headman Vilimunthumbo Nyirenda saying that there was no civic education done in Mzimba South East constituency which was covered in phase 7 of voter registration from November 1 to 14, 2013. The article also quoted the group village headman as saying “The Traditional leaders and other important stakeholders are not informed by the so-called civic educators. I have never attended any sensitization meeting by either NICE or MEC and I have never heard that they conduct such meeting in our area”. The Commission wishes to inform the nation and all stakeholders that it conducted several civic education meetings in the constituency including one which was attended by Group Village Headman Vilimunthumbo Nyirenda. This meeting took place at TEDECO CBO (Mkoma School) on October 22 before registration started in the area. During the meeting Group Village Headman Vilimunthumbo Nyirenda was offered an opportunity to speak. He asked the Commission to consider re-demarcating the constituency so that the area under his jurisdiction should be seceded from Mzimba South East constituency. At the end of the meeting, the group village headman, together with other traditional leaders, was given posters, brochures and letters to distribute to his people whenever he conducts mobilization meetings. So the Commission is very surprised by the remark that there were no civic and voter education meetings in his area. Apart from the meetings with traditional leaders, the Commission also deployed teams that were going through the constituency with loudhailers mobilizing the public to go and register. The Commission also placed messages on radio stations as part of civic and voter education. The Commission has also a Civic and Voter Education Assistant who has been conducting meetings sensitizing people about registration in the area. The Commission wishes to assure the public that it remains committed to working with all stakeholders to build an informed electorate to ensure that 2014 elections are a success.
