PRESS RELEASE On 08/30/2014 at approximately 12:00 a.m., Deputies from the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office responded to a personal injury accident of an ATV in a wooded area north of Sayles Road, between Johnson Road and Hawley Highway. While Deputies were en route to the scene, Ionia County Central Dispatch advised that the subject involved in the accident was not breathing. The investigation revealed that a Polaris ATV operated by a 36 year old man from the Saranac area had gone over the edge of a ravine in the woods. Based on witness accounts, it is believed that the operator was attempting to climb a steep hill and was going too fast to stop when the ATV reached the plateau. The ATV struck a large fallen tree branch and then proceed to go over the edge of a deep ravine. First responders on scene attempted to revive the male subject but were unable to resuscitate him. No other passengers were on the ATV at the time of the accident. This accident still remains under investigation by the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office. Also assisting at the scene were Life EMS, Saranac Fire, Ruehs’s Towing, and Lakes Funeral Home. #5442-14
