PRESS STATEMENT NASARAWA STATE GOVERNMENT REFUTES AMNESTY PLAN FOR OMBATSE MILITIA Nasarawa State Government hereby denies a report in some media that this administration is considering granting amnesty for the outlawed Ombatse militia of the Eggon ethnic group widely accused of killing and perpetrating other heinous crimes in some parts of the State. The Government further states that the story is false, unfounded and calculated at dragging this government to the mud and rubbishing the efforts of the administration towards finding a lasting solution to the activities of the Ombatse militia. The Government expresses displeasure that a story of such magnitude was published without recourse to what the Governor said while delivering a lecture on the topic: Contemporary Security Challenges in Nasarawa State at the Institute for Security Studies in Bwari, Abuja on Tuesday, 29th October, 2013. The Government notes that it would amount to pre-empting the work of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry set up by the State Government to ascertain the immediate and remote causes of the killings of security personnel at Alakyo who were on their routine duty and to also unmask their sponsors. This story as published by a section of media is a figment of the imagination of the writer(s). The report is a misrepresentation of what the Governor said during a question and answer session after delivering a lecture to the participants. The Governor only implored security agents to intensify efforts at recovering arms that are illegally in the possession of the militia and other unauthorized persons. This to him, will go a long way in reducing and eliminating the menace of attacks on persons and properties that is eating deep into the fabric of our society .He only cited the example of Late President Yar Aduas model as among other models that have achieved result in disarmament. The Government is concerned by the inconveniences this report might have caused the public, especially the victims of these attacks and the Judicial Commission of Enquiry currently investigating the killing of security operatives in Alakyo and other communities. This administration would continue to maintain peaceful co-existence among the diverse ethnic groups in the State and would leave no stone unturned to bring the perpetrators and their sponsors to book. Hamza Elayo Mohammed Honourable Commissioner for Information and Ethical Re-orientation ;l.
