PRINCE OF WALES HOSPITAL TO UNDERTAKE PERITONECTOMY SURGERY Peritonectomy surgery will be undertaken at Prince of Wales Hospital to allow more patients to have their surgery sooner, Health Minister Jillian Skinner said today. Six category one patients waiting for peritonectomy surgery at St George Hospital will undergo the operation at Prince of Wales Hospital between November 4 and December 11. “Peritonectomy surgery is a rare and complex procedure which is only available in NSW at St George Hospital, leading to significant pressure on the waiting list,” Mrs Skinner said. “The difficulty is not budget - it is about the capacity of St George Hospital to provide intensive post-operative care for peritonectomy patients, which can extend to many weeks. “I thank the clinicians of Prince of Wales Hospital and the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District for their cooperation in finding the capacity which will enable Professor David Morris to undertake these six extra surgeries. They are in addition to the six peritonectomies he will continue to undertake at St George Hospital each month. “We will continue working towards a longer term solution to this complex issue.” Mrs Skinner condemned Labor for continuing its lies about the health budget. “The South Eastern Sydney Local Health District had a 4.5% increase in this year’s budget, while St George Hospital’s budget increased by $12 million,” Mrs Skinner said. “The complexity of this issue is beyond the Opposition, which has been peddling alarm while we have been working towards a solution for the benefit of these seriously ill patients.” Mrs Skinner said the St George Hospital Peritonectomy Clinical Review Committee - of which Professor Morris is a member - will continue to determine the priority of patients for surgery, at both St George Hospital and Prince of Wales Hospital.
