PRMC has been named Delmarvas ONLY Blue Distinction Center+ for Hip and Knee and Spine Surgery. Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC) has been designated by CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (CareFirst) as a Blue Distinction Center+ for Hip and Knee Replacement and a Blue Distinction Center+ for Spine Surgery. PRMC has held Blue Distinction Center designations for Hip and Knee Replacement and Spine Surgery continuously since 2009. It is now one of only seven hospitals in Maryland to be designated as a Blue Distinction Center+ in both Hip and Knee Replacement and Spine Surgery in this latest reporting cycle, and is the only Delmarva Peninsula hospital to earn both honors. To the consumer, hospitals may all look the same, but the fact is there are often differences in the quality of care patients receive depending on the facility they choose. The Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care® program is a national designation awarded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies to only those medical facilities that have demonstrated expertise in delivering quality specialty care. Hospitals were evaluated on those items that impact patients most, including: • The expertise of the medical team. • Number of times the facility has performed the procedure. • The facility’s track-record for procedure results. The program has been recently expanded to include more robust quality measures focused on improved patient health and safety as well as new cost-efficiency measures. Those hospitals, like Peninsula Regional Medical Center, that met both the existing and new measures were awarded the additional plus (+) designation. “Peninsula Regional Medical Center’s Orthopaedic and Neuroscience division is committed to focusing on the core elements of excellence,” stated Warner Crumb, Executive Director of Orthopaedics and Neurosciences. “Through collaboration among surgeons, administration, and nursing, we are continuing a culture of performance improvement that leads to an exceptional patient experience and exceptional patient outcomes. We’re proud to have met the rigorous selection criteria that have been set by the Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care program, and believe these designations will serve as a catalyst, driving strong programs like ours to become even better.” Some of the additional services offered by Peninsula Regional’s Orthopaedic and Neurosciences division that contributed to these Blue Distinction Center designations include a unit designated specifically to the care of the hip/knee replacement and spine surgery patients, pre and post-operative functional assessments, rehabilitation sessions seven days a week, readiness for discharge assessment and 24/7 inpatient pharmacy services. Research confirms that the newly designated Blue Distinction Centers+ demonstrate better quality and improved outcomes for patients, with lower rates of complications and readmissions than their peers. Blue Distinction Centers+ are also more than 20 percent more cost-efficient, provide patients with tools to make better informed healthcare decisions and enable employers working with their local Blue Plan to tailor benefits to meet their individual quality and cost objectives. The selection criteria used by CareFirst to evaluate facilities were developed with input from the medical community and include general quality and safety metrics as well as program-specific metrics.
