PROJECT FOR THE SECOND QUARTER: DEADLINE AUGUST 8, 2013 CREATE YOUR OWN ALGEBRA TILES Algebra tiles are known as mathematical manipulatives that allow students to better understand ways of algebraic thinking and the concepts of algebra. These tiles have proven to provide concrete models for elementary school, middle school, high school, and college-level introductory algebra students. For many students, abstract algebraic concepts are more easily grasped with the concrete representations displayed by the tiles. In addition, the tactile nature of the tiles, allows students to connect on a personal level with the concepts being discussed. WHAT YOU NEED: One ¼ illustration board (at least) Two colored 1/8 colored cartolina Scissors Pay envelope or letter envelope PROCEDURE: For the stage Using the white side of the illustration board create two lines, vertical and horizontal, which is about 3 inches from the top and left edge shown below. Using the black side of the illustration board, attach the envelope. This will keep your tiles. For the tiles Get your ¼ colored cartolina, this will become your positive tiles. Following the pattern and the measures, cut the following: 18 pieces 1in x 1in “1” tiles 8 pieces 1in x 2.5in “X” tiles 4 pieces 2.5in x 2.5in “X^2” tiles Repeat the process on your other ¼ colored cartolina, this will become your negative tiles.
