PROTESTING Bini youths Wednesday sealed up the premises of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in Benin City, Edo state capital after sacking staff of the Commission, declaring that the delay in the appointment of the state representative in the board of the NDDC is impeding development in the oil producing communities in Edo South. While urging the senator representing Edo South, Senator Ehigie Uzamere to stop playing politics with the NDDC position, they appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to jettison the politics of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and appoint Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s nominee in the NDDC board. The protest which commenced at about 7am created panic in the area when staff of the NDDC took to their heels when the hundreds of youths storm the premises of the commission. After pursuing staff of the commission, the protesters locked up the premises and vowed not to leave there until the President appoints an NDDC representative for the state. Some of placards reads: “President Jonathan respect Edo people and give us NDDC Rep”, “Uzamere dont destroy NDDC in Edo because of your selfish interest”, “Mr President stop playing PDP politics and resptect Oshiomhole’s nominee”. The leader of the youths under the aegis of The Youths for Good Governance, Jessy Iyamu Osaro, recalled that the youths had earlier issued a 2-week ultimatum to both the Federal Government and Governor Oshiomhole, where they requested that the stakeholders must urgently reach an accord on d choice of the state NDDC commissioner in order not to destroy the laudable projects embarked upon by the Commission in the state. “We heard that there is disagreement between Governor Oshiomhole and Senator Uzamere on the issue and that is why the President has not appointed Edo NDDC Commissioner. But our argument is that the Governors of other states were asked to produce the NDDC commissioner in their states why will Mr President listen to a senator who did not know how Oshiomhole made efforts in ensuring that Edo people supported President Jonathan in 2011 and voted for him immensely” he stated.
