PUBLIC HOUSING IS UNDER ATTACK! HELP US TAKE A STAND AGAINST THE PRIVATIZATION OF NYCHA! The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) has proposed a series of cuts and private deals in response to operating deficits and federal sequestration. Among other things, NYCHA plans to cut jobs and vital services to its 600K residents, including drastic cuts to its Section 8 program. NYCHA also intends to apply to HUD to become a Moving to Work (MTW) authority, which could lead to waivers on federal laws/regulations and impose greater restrictions on residents including term limits on their leases. In addition to these cuts, Bloomberg and his Housing Authority proposed a Land Lease Plan that would lease public housing land to private developers for 99 years to build luxury towers on the parks and playgrounds of Lower East Side and Harlem public housing developments. This decision to privatize public land was made without any engagement from the community can be finalized as soon as this December! This plan could be extended to other developments and other boroughs. On July 24th, public housing residents will take over the NYCHA Draft Annual Plan hearing to oppose these cuts and demand that NYCHA immediately terminate the Land Lease Plan and stop the privatization of public housing! THE FIGHT IS HEATING UP AND WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT TO WIN OUR DEMANDS: - Immediate halt to NYCHA’s Land Lease Plan that proposes to build luxury housing on the parks and playgrounds of public housing projects. - Immediate termination of $100 million annual payments from NYCHA to the NYPD, Sanitation, and PILOTS. - Save community and senior centers that NYCHA has proposed to close down, as well as the job losses that would result from the closures. - Special public hearing must be held to address any proposal for NYCHA to become a Moving-To-Work authority. - NYCHA must press HUD for its fair share of $100 million set aside to deal with the sequester on Section 8 residents. - NYCHA must develop a disaster preparedness plan that is subject to public review and a special public hearing. HERE’S HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT: 1. Endorse the platform and the action. 2. Help us reach a critical mass of demonstrators! Our goal is to pack the hearing and the streets!
