Pakistan exported 945,033 metric tonnes sugar during July-May period of the current fiscal year. Cement, sugar export scales up Export of non-textile products witnessed a paltry growth of 1.55 per cent in the 11 months of this fiscal year from a year ago, mainly driven by increase in export of cement, sugar and jewellery. In absolute terms, export of non-textile products totalled $10.39 billion in July-May 2012-13 as against $10.231bn in the corresponding period last year, suggested data of Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. However, export of traditional products, like sports goods, surgical instruments, rice and carpets witnessed a substantial decline during the period under review. A decline of 1.28 per cent was noted in the export of carpets while sports goods dipped by 2.92pc. And export of gur declined by 0.19pc in July-May period this year from a year ago. Export of footballs dropped by 6.59pc while gloves registered an increase of 11.21pc during the period under review. Export of cement at 17.43pc, handicraft 644.30pc, furniture 13.75pc, jewellery 62.83pc and gems 15.01pc during July-May 2012-13. Contrary to this, export of surgical goods and medical instruments fell by 1.60pc. However, the export of engineering goods rebounded and witnessed a marginal growth of 2.75pc. The exports of leather made-ups rebounded as it recorded a growth of 6.58pc during the July-May period of the current fiscal year over the last year. This growth was mainly driven by an increase of 12.57pc in export of leather garments. The country’s export of traditional products witnessed substantial decline in the current fiscal year mainly due to high input cost and low demand from the emerging markets because of recession. These products were also facing stiff competition from China and India. The export of food items witnessed an increase of 11.09pc during the July-May period of the current fiscal year as it stood at $4.342bn in July-May period of the current fiscal year as against $3.909bn last year. This growth was mainly driven by unprecedented increase in export of sugar during the period under review. In terms of value, export proceeds of sugar stood at $474.512m in the first 11 months of the current fiscal year as against $19.193m during the corresponding period of last year, reflecting an increase of 2,372 pc. Export of meat, oil, spices, fruits, vegetables and fish also witnessed an increase during the period under review. Rice export witnessed a decline of 7.94pc during the July-May period of the current fiscal year over last year. Of these, export of basmati rice declined by over 22.43pc during the period under review. However, export of non-basmati rice surged by 1.41pc
