#Palestine (I hope this isnt already obvious to everyone else but Im still trying to understand what Im seeing as the continuing ethnic cleansing of Palestine is unfolding in front of us.) Last night I watched a multi-part documentary on the Nakba and my take away was, so many of the Israeli government abuses of Palestinians come straight out of practices used by the British during the Mandate. Dehumanization of the indigenous at every level. Family home demolitions, checkpoints, targeted assassination of leaders, imprisonment without charge, casual homicide, abuse of women, children, elderly, transfer of populations. Many if not most of the monstrosities that are so appalling today come right out of that period. So asking, how could Jews three years out of the Holocaust commit an ethnic cleansing is the wrong, too narrow frame. The plan to colonize Palestine by Jews predates that event by decades. Its more that WW2 accelerated a plan already in progress, in no small part by providing a group of veterans of the British armed forces to help organize the Jewish militia of 40,000. So, the Jewish colony in Palestine was fostered by the British for 30 years before the Nakba in every sense of the word. With funding, diplomatic support, military support and training, lessons in managing the local population. (Theres another little piece here that isnt clear yet. But the British stepped up their efforts in Palestine just after the Easter Rising in Ireland, almost as if to displace and distance the turmoil there to a safer remove, maybe even to a proxy.)
