Panay News Lapsus Calami: September 23, 2014 LIFESTYLE CHECK VS BINAYS It is quite unfair if only the Philippine National Police generals and its officers and other government officials and personnel are subjected to a lifestyle check by the Bureau of INTERNAL REVENUE (BIR). The BIR policy on lifestyle check must be applied to all in the government. Before entering government service in 1986 when then President Cory Aquino appointed him OIC mayor of Makati City, Vice President Jejomar Binay was classified as a poor man. He had no businesses except simple lawyering for ordinary cases involving the members of the hoi polloi in Makati. We heard that he used to have a piggery business with three or four pigs. But the maintenance expense of his backyard piggery was more than the income which could have been derived from it. Binay started gathering wealth when he was Makati’s OIC mayor, then as mayor several times, and later on became vice president. His wife also became mayor. And now his son, Jun-Jun is the mayor of the first-class city. “Ganito kami sa Makati,” was Binay’s political battle cry during the 2010 election. Voters did not know what the message was all about. They thought there was massive progress in the prime city and people living there were all contented materially, with no one clamoring for food. They did not know that underneath the façade of Binay’s pro-poor stance was hidden wealth – ill-gotten wealth, that is. If Binay becomes president (God forbid!), this country will go to the dogs.
