Panorama: New Acquisitions of the work of Thomas Markey, Drogheda Municipal Art Collection Opening Reception: Wednesday 26 June 2013 at 7.30pm Nine topographical drawings of Drogheda in pen by the self-taught and much loved artist Thomas Markey are to go on view as part of the summer Collection exhibition Panorama opening next Wednesday 26 June. The drawings, together with the recently conserved oil painting The Resurrection, also by Markey, will make their first public appearance on the walls of the upper gallery. This work will be presented in the context of the wider Collection considering the theme of Drogheda, which has both consumed and inspired artists through the centuries, and will include work as early as the 18th century by Gabrielle Ricciardelli, up to now, including work by Laurence Fagan, John Cassidy, Nano Reid, L.S. Lowry and Richard Moore. The opening reception on Wednesday 26 at 7.30pm will include a gallery talk about Thomas Markey by Sarah Gates, art historian and Senior Valuer at Whyte’s Art Auctioneers and Valuers, Dublin, who will be joined by Thomas Markey’s granddaughter Kathleen Smyth. All welcome. The Markey drawings were acquired for Highlanes Gallery earlier in the year through the unique collaboration and cooperation of three parties; Drogheda Borough Council, the County of Louth Historical and Archaeological Society and the Old Drogheda Society with the intention of retaining them in Drogheda, the County of Louth, and in the care of the Drogheda Municipal Art Collection at Highlanes Gallery. The exhibition continues until Saturday August 10. Highlanes Gallery is grateful for the on-going financial support of Drogheda Borough Council and the Arts Council.
