Parents, please take a minute to reinforce with your bus riding children general bus safety, crossing the street etc. Very upset with what I witnessed this afternoon. Our regular WONDERFUL bus driver was absent today and a substitute bus driver was driving the bus. Our children have to cross over a lane of traffic after exiting the bus to get into our driveway. Problem #1: Bus driver allowed Julia (1st grade) to exit the bus and stand IN FRONT of the bus BEFORE the oncoming lane of traffic had stopped. Thankfully, Julia stopped and waited for the pick-up truck still moving in the oncoming lane to stop. Problem #2: Bus driver honked horn LOUDLY two times (remember Julia is directly in front of the bus) and screams Go go to Julia while the truck in the oncoming lane is still progressing towards her. I instantly yell, for Julia to stop (she is teary eyed and scared with all the crazy commotion now) and for her to wait until the truck stops to cross the street. Problem #3: Bus driver yells at me, shes fine...tell her to go. I reply that she has made the right choice to stop and wait for oncoming traffic to stop. Problem #4: Bus driver waives his hands in the air, slams his window closed and pulls away from the bus stop with a bus load full of kids. I was left with a very confused and scared little girl. Called the head of transportation and was told she would speak with the driver. Im not really ok with that.....not ok at all with how my childs safety was compromised. Today could have turned out very differently. If the honking and yelling from the driver had scared Julia she could have run out into the oncoming traffic! Please take a minute to reinforce safety with your kiddos....AND check in with your kids about substitute bus drivers:(
