Parker Mom (Parent): Response to Arne Duncans invitation to talk about Innovation in our schools Innovation in the schools of Douglas County, Colorado Wow! Our schools are so very innovative. They have run the union here in to the ground with their innovations; innovations that are chasing our good teachers out the door, because they have no job protections any more. The have developed an innovative pay for performance plan which is forcing more of our great teachers to leave for neighboring districts where they get paid better. The school district states there is no quota for the number of teachers who can receive the highest pay, but then the school district only has so much money so it would be impossible for them to pay more than a certain percent of teachers at the highest pay bands. The district had to go in to several schools and change the criteria to achieve the highly effective teacher ratings. Our district is so innovative in their pushing of vouchers so our children can go to private schools. I dont know about you, but I am super excited for my tax dollars going to fund schools that refuse to teach evolution, because as we know the Theory of Evolution is a tool of the devil. Or schools that are able to discriminate against disabled students, because, you know they just dont have the appropriate services for those children. I love that they are spending my childs education dollars to fight this legally. Our district is so innovative in their use of education dollars to hire a PR firm to improve their image in the community, because the stakeholders (that would be us: the children and parents) are so worried about what is happening. Our district is so innovative in their use of tax payer funds to develop new and better standardized tests that are just as bad as the ones that the Federal Government is pushing on us. Just so that our children can spend weeks and weeks of time learning how to fill in bubbles so they can demonstrate their proficiency. I love how even in kindergarten and first grade my childs homework has been focused on teaching to these ridiculous tests, which have no hope of demonstrating my childs abilities including her characteristics like empathy and creativity. I love that these standardized tests are being used to demonize teachers as underperforming buffoons. I love that a teachers livelihood can be based on how well his/her students perform on this one measure of achievement. So freaking innovative! I think it’s innovative that no one in their right mind would want to become a teacher in the climate that you and your cronies in DC and in our fabulously innovative school district have created. Why would anyone sign up for crap wages only to be vilified as money grubbing, glorified, baby sitters? Thanks so much for Douglas County Schools and the Department of Educations Innovation!
