This was the start of what is now the New Britain Fresh Air Camp. Today it is one of the outstanding health camps in the state. It is now a well-equipped camp with some 15 permanent buildings. The camp has an excellent water system. It is completely electrified, and shower facilities have recently been added. In addition it has a large well-equipped play area, an overnight cabin and a clean, safe swimming pool. The children play, swim, eat three meals and two lunches a day and go home stronger and healthier with some 67% gain in weight. The camp infirmary is large and well-equipped to care for the children. It is co-ed, taking children between the ages of 7-16, and each of the 200 children are given 4 weeks of camping. Catholic and Protestant religious services are held every Sunday. Health, Character and Camping are out objectives and a suitable program is arranged to meet these aims. The children are all from New Britain and are either from T.B. families or are undernourished or underprivileged. A selecting committee of four prominent citizens screen the applicants each year. There is no cost to the children or the parents as the camp is supported completely by the people of New Britain through their Community Chest. Frank W. Schade, Camp Director.” Historical narrative courtesy of New Britain, Connecticut, 1850-1950. Written in 1950.
