Parliament Speech for Motion on ASPIRE Committee Recommendations 8 Sep 14 (Part 5 - Final) GIVING EQUAL RESPECT TO ALL JOBS, SKILLS AND TALENTS How do we value success? Is it material wealth, is it the degree, or is it job status? How do we value jobs each of us have and the roles we play in society? Is every job a respectable job – from the cleaners, the construction and delivery workers to the managers and the CEO? Does society treat each worker, no matter what rank or pay, with equal respect? Status has always played an important part in any society, and more so in the Asian culture where we want to have it all, the kiasu-mentality – cannot lose. I see our culture and mindsets being the biggest hurdles we need to overcome. For the recommendations to work, our value system must transform and be aligned to what ASPIRE set out to do. Indeed, there is a lot of work yet to be done for these proposals to be fully implemented and accepted. The ASPIRE committee has done well to recommend some innovative and bold suggestions but now the rest of the nation must do its part to carry these plans out. The benefits they bring to the society and economy potentially outweigh the costs and because of that Mr Deputy Speaker, I support the adoption of these proposals. Thank you.
