Part 1 of a 2 part series on the Satmar Rebbe based on an academic article and forthcoming biography on the Satmar Rebbe. It paints a very human picture of the rebbe. Some might find this article blasphemous or destructive. I dont see it that way. It humanizes the rebbe. What might we have done differently? Its hard to judge anyone ever, let alone someone facing death. Fleeing for your life is certain to make one paranoid and give us PTSD. So if the rebbe seemed paranoid and affected by PTSD that just makes him human. The mistake is to have made him (or anyone) more that human in the first place. (The one thing I think we can criticize is preaching pure bitachon for others and advising people in his charge to trust God and do nothing else while taking active steps to free himself. But this is nothing new. I dont think.)
