Parvo 101 Since we have had another spike in parvo cases lately, I thought I would give everyone some information about parvo and how to prevent it. Parvo is an intestinal virus that attacks puppies with immature immune systems. It can also attack older dogs that havent had adequate vaccinations. It kills the lining of the small intestine, and the puppy dies of dehydration or septicemia (bacterial infection that goes into the bloodstream). The symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea with blood, depression and not wanting to eat. There is a good chance that the puppy will die without treatment, and they can die even with treatment. Please do not get another puppy if your last puppy died of parvo. It is a very hard virus to kill, and even with bleaching your yard it can still be there. Either get an older dog who has had all its vaccinations, or keep your new puppy at a different location until it is completely vaccinated. Thankfully, this is a preventable disease. Puppies need at least 3 distemper/parvo shots 3 weeks apart, starting at 6-8 weeks. The cost to have Noahs Ark give these vaccinations is $150 (less if the last one is given when the puppy is spayed or neutered), while the cost to treat a puppy with parvo is about $200. Again, there is no guarantee that your puppy will live even with treatment. If you choose to vaccinate your puppy yourself, be sure to refrigerate the vaccine from the time you get it until you give it. Follow the schedule given above.
