Patel saeb, Plate saeb In 2008, when elections for the legislative assembly of J and K were held, to shove under carpet any reminiscent impact of 2008 summer uprising, the establishment in delhi made even the most feckless, obscure and highly gullible people to contest elections by giving them more monetary benefits ( benefits were 100 times more ). By this process, they were successful in accumulating votes and selling the vote percentage as normalcy in the international market. One such candidate was Patel saeb, who, unlike many others, has been contesting election after election, without any success. Patel believes himself to be a congressman but hasnt been given mandate by the party ever. Before every election, he defects from the party and post results, he becomes a congress-man. Since Kashmir remains without electricity for most part of its winter, the people of one village named Jhandawaal, 7 kilometres to the south of Pulwama town in south kashmir, facing absence of electricity for months together before the elections with the non-functional transformer untouched by mechanics, went protesting to the Power Development office. Patel saeb, his quarter being close to the office, decided to be the leader of the protesting people to make their case before the engineer. ( It is another matter, even the shortage of basic amenities like tap water, electricity etc result in Azaadi slogans and thereby killings ). While Patel saeb, who one protestor pronounced, in his slogans in favour of Patel, as Plate saeb managed to get a transformer for the people, he made them promise that they will vote for Patel saeb only. Pulwama went to polling one day ( Elections are a very prolonged process in J and K, damn to taxpayers money and any positive energy, it is to ensure heavy percentages, if in case one strategy fails in one segment, it is changed for other segments to yield positive results ). Patel saeb rushed to the village next day of the polling to check whether the people have delivered on their promise. Patel saeb asking the question, waniv Jhandawaal quio luaeko, kamis duitov panun voat? ( Tell me, o denizens of Jhandawaal, whom did you vote for? ), the resounding answer came, hata haaz aethus haaz. ( we voted for Hand, the party symbol of congress ) ( haaz in Pulwama, haez in srinagar and to the north of srinagar, haz in Anantnag Islamabad, a mark of respect ). Much to the dismay of both, Patel saeb as well as the villagers, Patel saeb thundered, hataa woaethva khanun baemb, daed wo khaana, hataa bae naa osus nae aetha kehn, bae ha oasus Cup-Plate. ( May your households get bombed from skies, may your houses get burnt, I wasnt hand, my symbol was Cup-Plate. People had voted for hand in the thought that Patel saeb is a congressman, when he was an independent candidate. This time too, Plate saeb, most probably, is in the fray to accumulate a hundred, two hundred votes which dont benefit him but cause harm to the larger picture. This is a kind of democracy that people experience in our part of the world and are thrusted with.
