Pat’s Chat - 09.28.14 We enjoyed a harvest festival at the Eugene Sapp farm in their big barn and grounds. Bonfire, hayrides, gospel music from the Dean family, picnic foods, roasting hot dogs and marshmallows for ‘smores, and delightful socializing were some of the fun things our church members and friends enjoyed this past weekend. I am so happy that one of my sons and his family has moved to Buckhannon. I am blessed. Previously I told you that our church at 1122 Brushy Fork Road is now providing a Bible Marking Class each Wednesday evening at 6:30 and everyone is welcome. You might get a better idea of what we are doing if I just give you a tiny preview so you would know if you’d enjoy doing this with us. We list each study as we go on a back flyleaf of our Bibles. Our King James Versions are all alike so we have the same page numbers to make it easier to find each text. We have a set of colored pencils to help designate different studies. The note gives the title of the study; for instance, “Salvation.” We chose a blue color for this study. Here is what I have in my Bible: “5. S – (Salvation) – I John 4:8, 9 (1794)”. (We then circle the “S” with blue pencil), then write “I John 4:8, 9” which is our first text, then the page number of our Bible “(1794)”. When we turn to page 1794 and find the text we highlight in yellow pencil “God is love” in verse 8, and “the love of God toward us” in the verse 9, and color the rest of the two verses blue. Beside the text in the margin, we write “2. S – Gen. 3:8 (4)”, which means our next text is on page 4 in Genesis. We abbreviate all the long names of Bible books to save space. The highlighted part of this verse is “Adam and his wife hid themselves” and the rest of the verse is blue. (This verse tells us why we NEED salvation, you see. Adam and Eve chose to disobey God which caused them to be afraid so they and all their offspring became sinners.) Beside that verse we write “2S – Rom. 6:23 (1655)”. We turn there and highlight in yellow “wages of sin is death” and “the gift of God is eternal life.” The rest is actually red because this verse was used in a previous study, so to designate that this actually is also a blue study, the verse number (23) is circled in blue and a blue line is drawn down the left side of this verse. In the margin we write “4S – Rom. 3:23 (1651)”. Highlight in yellow “all have sinned” and color the rest of the verse blue. That is how we do the rest of the study and all other studies. There are a total of 15 to 20 verses in each study, and although these verses do not cover ALL the verses that could be used that also pertain to the subject, it is usually enough for helping someone to learn the lesson from the study. It is also a good way to review and study the subject for ourselves at times when we have questions or can’t remember something. Many people say it is too difficult to find texts and they shy away from using their Bibles because of that. Having the page numbers written right beside the text will help you find it quickly. Once you have gone over these studies and other Bible activities, it becomes easier and easier to find the books and texts without a page number, but you don’t need to be afraid. Come join us and find what God’s Word says about these many other subjects. It is never safe to go by what people (even ministers) tell us. We need to study it for ourselves from God’s Word. Join us next Wednesday evening at 6:30 and we will help you catch up with the lessons you have missed. If you have any questions just call me at 304.472.5102. Maranatha!
