Peaceful Protest Planned by Musgamagw Dzawada’enuxw and Allies to Combat Identity and Land Theft and Lack of Accountability What: Peaceful Protest against the Mamalilikala-Qwe-Qwa-Sot-Em separation referendum by Musgamagw Dzawada’enuxw and Allies When: Saturday, October 5th at 11:00am Where: Thunderbird Hall, Campbell River Why: Standing up against blatant identity theft Campbell River – Over 100 people will gather on Saturday, October 5th at Thunderbird Hall to stand up against a family bent on rewriting our people’s history for financial and personal gain. Harold Sewid is declaring that he is Kwikwasut’inuxw and is seeking approval from AANDC to create a new band called the Qwe-Qwa-Sot-Em (Real Kwikwasut’inuxw), in an attempt to usurp the land and standings of the Kwikwasut’inuxw People who are members of Kwikwasut’inuxw-Haxwa’mis First Nation and he thinks this simple change in spelling will fool the system and the people involved. The Sewids claim that they are the true Kwikwasut’inuxw and that the people from Health Bay (Gilford Island) are just squatters. How can AANDC create a second band with the same name without consulting the original one? – this is a blatant example of lack of consultation and lack of attention to detail. Up until this time the Sewid family has always been a part of the Mamalilikila band. The Sewid family is claiming the history, lands and authority of a nation that already exists – this is Identify theft. They are calling the Kwikwasut’inuxw People living in Health Bay on Gilford Island squatters in their own lands. This issue effects more than just the Kwikwasut’inuxw Nation but all of the Kwakwaka’wakw Nations. Several nations from the Kwakwaka’wakw have expressed their concerns over this proposed new Band and will be coming to support the efforts to stop the new band referendum from going through which if successful would set the precedent for political chaos. The hereditary chiefs and some of the members of the Mamalilikala are in support of the true Kwikwasut’inuxw living on Gilford Island. On Saturday, there will be a peaceful protest to stop this referendum from going through and a petition to have the voices of the Kwikwasut’inuxw living on Gilford Island heard, which so far have been deliberately excluded from a process which seeks to steal their identity and lands. There will be drums and people are being asked to bring regalia. Traditional leadership is heading the process.
