Peaking under the skirt and checking out how hot the textile monoliths are was going viral at Regina Benson’s solo show, “Catching Fire”. Eleven LED and CFL lit monoliths populated the gallery like a cosmic garden. During her artist talk, Regina reverse engineered one of her monoliths for the attendees; demonstrating the light configurations; how she created the diffusers from white muslin and embroidery hoops; and how the dramatic surface markings were achieved by dying white cloth, laying it on snow, and selectively removing layers of dye with house brushes, airbrushes, and eye droppers – all the while burning the cloth here and there while using soy wax as a resist! You can still catch the PBS Arts District program that features a visit to Regina’s studio, an interview with her about her artistic vision and the PBS crew’s visit to the opening of the show: video.rmpbs.org/video/2365332247/ Lithuanian born and currently living in Colorado, Regina maintains an active studio practice in Golden while show-casing her work nationally and internationally.
