"Pecuniary Allowance - Ekiti Teachers Accept 16 Percent, Suspend Strike" Public school teachers in Ekiti State have suspended their five-week-old strike called by the Nigeria Union of Teachers over the non-payment of teachers 27.5 per cent pecuniary allowance. At a meeting called to suspend the strike, it was gathered that the government agreed to pay the teachers 16 per cent and differed the balance till when the financial situation of the state improves. The Commissioner for Education, Mr. Kehinde Ojo, who addressed newsmen after an agreement was signed with leaders of NUT in the state, promised that no teacher would be penalized for participating in the strike. While calling on teachers to resume work immediately, the commissioner commended them for being well behaved throughout the period of the strike and for allowing the conduct of all public examinations. The commissioner, however, indicated that the school calendar might be adjusted to accommodate the time lost by students. Also speaking, the state chairman of NUT, Mr Kayode Akosile, described the suspension as a "painful decision", adding that they decided to suspend the action in the interest of the state. He said teachers "grudgingly" agreed to accept the 16 per cent offered by the government to ensure quick resolution of the crisis.
