Peggy Noonan asks in her column How cold do you have to be to use children in this way? Apparently our government leaders and functionaries are ice cold in this crisis that appears to have been allowed to happen, even encouraged, to achieve a political purpose. The long distance travel endured by these children is incredibly taxing - and weakens these child-pawns - puts their very lives at risk. Our country cannot be an open repository for those whose home countries cannot offer a decent life. We will be crippled by chaos and turmoil to take these first arrivals in, and then find that very act has encouraged more to make the dangerous trek. As in-humane as that position may seem, it is even more in-humane to offer hope where the payoff is not likely to happen. Immigration must be an orderly process. Compassion cannot be the only criteria for allowing this influx to continue. We will be more compassionate to take actions that will send the message that crossing the border without proper permissions will not result in conferring the benefits of American citizenship, but will result in being returned to their home country.
